    Santorini Cruise Port Guide

Everything you need to know about visiting Santorini on a cruise ship

Santorini is one of the most popular cruise destinations in the Mediterranean. Cruise ships anchor in the caldera, and passengers are brought ashore by tender boats to the old port below Fira.

From the old port, you can reach Fira by cable car, donkey ride, or by walking up the 588 steps. This guide explains the process, timing considerations, and how to make the most of your day in Santorini.

Use this guide to plan your shore excursion, then check our things to do guide for activity ideas, or see our where to stay guide if you're extending your stay.

    Arrival Process

    Step 1: Tender Boats

Cruise ships anchor in the caldera. Passengers are transported to the old port by tender boats (small boats). This process can take 15-30 minutes depending on your ship's position and queue.

Tip: Book shore excursions through your cruise line for priority tender access, or arrive early to avoid long queues.

    Step 2: Reaching Fira

    Cable Car

    Duration: 3 minutes

    Price: €6 (one way)

Fastest and most popular option. Can have long queues.

    Donkey Ride

    Duration: 20-30 minutes

    Price: €5-€10

Traditional but controversial. Consider animal welfare.

    Walking

    Duration: 20-30 minutes

    Price: Free

588 steps. Steep and can be slippery. Not recommended for those with mobility issues.

Making the Most of Your Day

    If You Have 4-6 Hours

    • • Visit Fira (shopping, dining, caldera views)
    • • Take bus or taxi to Oia for sunset
    • • Or visit a winery for wine tasting
    • • Return to Fira for cable car back to port

    If You Have 6-8 Hours

    • • Explore Fira and Oia
    • • Visit Red Beach or Kamari Beach
    • • Wine tasting at a local winery
    • • Visit Akrotiri archaeological site
    • • Return to Fira for departure

    Cruise Port Tips

    • Cable car queues: Lines can be very long, especially when multiple ships are in port. Allow 30-60 minutes for the return journey. Consider going up early and staying in Fira/Oia, or booking a shore excursion.
    • Timing: Plan your return carefully. Allow extra time for cable car queues. Missing your tender boat means missing your ship.
    • Shore excursions: Booked through your cruise line, these often include transportation and skip cable car queues. More expensive but less stressful.
    • Independent travel: Buses connect Fira to Oia, Kamari, and Perissa. Taxis are available but can be expensive. Plan your route in advance.
