Quick island hopping guide for Santorini to Ios.

    Santorini to Ios by Ferry

Ios is Santorini's nearest Cycladic neighbour and the easiest island to reach for a quick day trip or a multi-day extension. The Santorini to Ios ferry takes just 30–60 minutes, depending on the operator: high-speed services from SeaJets and Golden Star Ferries can cover the route in under 35 minutes, while conventional Blue Star ferries take about 1 hour and also carry vehicles. There are two to four crossings per day between May and October, with reduced service in winter.

One-way tickets cost €25–€45 for high-speed catamarans and €18–€30 for conventional ferries. Boats depart from Santorini's Athinios Port and arrive at Ios's main port in Ormos, on the south-west coast of the island. From the port, public buses connect to Chora (the hilltop main town) and Mylopotas Beach every 30 minutes for €2, and taxis line up immediately outside the port building.

    What to Do on Ios

Ios is famous for its lively nightlife, sandy beaches, and laid-back Cycladic atmosphere. Spend mornings on Mylopotas Beach (one of the longest sandy beaches in the Cyclades), afternoons exploring the marble-paved alleys of Chora, and evenings hopping between rooftop bars in the village. Don't miss the sunset at the windmills above Chora — many travellers say it rivals Santorini's. For a quieter afternoon, head to Manganari, an isolated triple-bay beach reached by a 30-minute drive or a small caique boat from Mylopotas.

    Day Trip vs Overnight

A day trip is feasible: catch the 09:00 ferry from Santorini and return on the 18:00 service, leaving you about seven hours on the island — enough time for a swim at Mylopotas, lunch in Chora, and a quick visit to the archaeological site of Skarkos. To experience Ios's famous nightlife, stay at least one night and book early during peak summer when hotels in Chora and Mylopotas fill weeks ahead.
